
FUNdamental Friday with Dean Johnson and Dr. Matt Jordan
Dr. Matthew Jordan is currently the Assistant Professor of Percussion at Jacksonville State University in Jacksonville, Alabama. He is also currently the front ensemble arranger for Music City Mystique, the Music Coordinator and Electronics Designer for the Bluecoats Drum and Bugle Corps, and Music Advisor for the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps. Matt completed the Doctor of Music degree from the Florida State University, a Master’s Degree from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor’s Degree from Middle Tennessee State University. Matt is a proud artist and clinician for Pearl/Adams instruments, Innovative Percussion sticks and mallets, Evans Drumheads, and Zildjian Cymbals.
Dean lives and works as a freelance percussion educator and arranger in Chattanooga, TN. Since 2010 he has instructed the Front Ensemble at several high school groups in the Southeast and Midwest areas including Woodford County High School in Versailles, KY, Fred J. Page High School in Franklin, TN, and Fishers High School in Fishers, IN.
Dean has been involved in the marching arts since 2006 and has been fortunate to perform with Tates Creek Indoor Ensemble (2010, 2011), Blue Stars Drum & Bugle Corps (2011, 2012), and Music City Mystique (2012, 2013). Since aging out of DCI, he’s worked with Spirit of Atlanta, where he served as the Front Ensemble Coordinator for the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He currently serves as the Front Ensemble Coordinator for Carolina Crown.
He has also been active in the WGI activity with Clarksville Audio Theater (2014) and Music City Mystique, where he has taught since the 2015 season. He served as the Front Ensemble Co-Caption Head for the 2020 season and looks forward to continuing this role moving forward.
